(September 2023) Simple Practices to Help Children and Families Heal from Trauma

While parents adopt and foster children with so much love in their hearts, they may not realize how trauma has affected their child’s ability to connect, regulate and cooperate. Big feelings and big behaviors can cause so much hurt and lead to dispiriting both parent and child. This workshop will introduce professionals to simple but highly effective practices that can help families heal from emotional hurt. The training will follow the Hand in Hand approach and will offer Tools to support a child’s strong instinct to heal. Kathy Gordon, Certified Hand in Hand Instructor and single adoptive parent will use anecdotes from her extensive personal and professional experience to illustrate the five “Listening Tools” that are the backbone of the approach. There will be plenty of time for questions as to how you can use these ideas in your practice and share them with parents.

The topics to be covered include:
– A working knowledge of “Special Time” and how it can strengthen the parent-child connection
– How to use play with a child to encourage their confidence, sense of safety, and connection
– How to implement “setting limits” and “safety listening” when children react with big feelings and big behaviors
– How to start a “listening partnership” which both professionals and parents can use to bolster their support system and reduce isolation

Kathy Gordon is a single adoptive Mother of a 19-year-old son and a Certified Instructor of Hand in Hand Parenting, founded by Patty Wipfler. For over a decade, she has worked with parents of children who have had challenging early experiences – including pre-term birth, prenatal complications, early illness and medical treatment, development challenges, and attachment disruptions. Kathy came to Hand in Hand while struggling with her son’s aggression and learning challenges. As an actress, director, and teacher, it was natural that she would want to share this trauma-informed attachment based parenting approach that gave her a road map for becoming empathetic therapeutic parents.  As a Hand in Hand Instructor, Kathy collaborated on the podcast “Helping Your Fost/Adoptive Child Heal While Staying Sane” She is currently one of the administrators of the Hand in Hand Parent Club Community where she answers questions from over 300 parents on a daily basis. She also co-hosts the new Hand in Hand Parent Club Podcast.  Having launched her almost 20-year-old son, Kathy lives in Los Angeles and works with parents around the world.
