(May 2023) Finding Your Child’s Lost Identity

When you adopt a child, their family and history comes with them. Often times children who are adopted become curious about their past. They want to know who they are, where they come from, oftentimes wanting answers when there are none to give. Adopted children often feel guilty for having these questions, leaving their adoptive parents feeling distressed. This training will provide the attendees with real life scenarios of how adoptees feel, including the presenter’s own story. Breanna will also share insight from adoptive parents who have encountered these tough situations and questions.

Breanna Gronli, LGSW, MSW, works with Sojourn Counseling Group as a private practice clinician, focusing her work on children ages 0-5 but currently accepts all ages. Breanna graduated with her Masters of Social Work in 2021 with a trauma certificate and has undergone extensive trauma training throughout her career. She earned her BA from University of Minnesota-Morris in Liberal Arts for the Human Services. She is currently working toward certification in TF CBT and has extensive training in Trust Based Relational Interventions, a trauma modality created by Karen Purvis and colleagues. She has dedicated her education and time to learning how to best help children who come from hard places. Before attending graduate school, Breanna worked for 7 years in the social work field in various capacities. She has been a rule 25 assessor for chemically addicted individuals, a child protection specialist, a forensic investigator (Corner House trained), a Guardian ad litem for both children’s and family court, and worked in foster care/adoption licensing. Breanna also has unique experience in that she was adopted at the age of 10 from the foster care system. She comes from a hard childhood and spent about 3.5 years in foster care. Breanna utilizes her extensive trauma experience to help others see the power in healing. She has all ten aces but does not let this stop her, understanding how important healing is in order to have a fulfilling life. Breanna understands from first hand experience how difficult it is to adjust to a new family and allow others in. Breanna believes it only takes one caring adult in a child’s life to make a difference. Together she works alongside foster families, adopted families, and parents with children experiencing symptoms of trauma as one unit. She will give you tools to not only aid your child to overcome their trauma but also to understand it and gain their voice back. Connection is key. When you can understand the why behind a child’s behavior, healing can begin. It takes a village to raise a child, let alone a child from a hard place.
