Part 1 of a 3-part series

This workshop will focus on how parents and caregivers can engage in culturally competent parenting through awareness, inclusivity, and respect. It will discuss cultural competency as an essential parenting skill that helps provide a strong sense of identity. Participants will explore how culture shapes values, communication styles, discipline practices, and family dynamics when parenting. Tools, resources and case examples will be provided.

Dr. Heather Siek is a full-time Assistant Professor of Psychology at Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM). She also is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor in the state of Minnesota for the past 14 years, primarily working with childhood anxiety and early childhood trauma within the non-profit setting. Last year, she opened her own small private practice where she continues to see clients on a part-time basis in addition to teaching full-time. She also is an adoptive mother of a 6 year-old girl named Audrey.

Rawand Amedi is a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) in North Dakota, Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW) in Minnesota, and therapist at Solace Counseling. She believes healing isn’t about becoming someone different, it’s about finding a safe space where you can show up as your true self. Rawand explores your story together, using approaches like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), narrative therapy, and a strengths-based lens that sees you not only for your struggles, but also for your resilience.
