Parental grief and disappointment are often the unidentified reasons adoptive and foster parents seek professional services. After years of frustration and lack of support, parents may report being disappointed in their experiences, their children, their families, the system, and themselves. This training will discuss how parents can develop acceptance and connection to self and child, respond to secondary trauma, and find a way to see and feel the positive.

Deena McMahon, LICSW, McMahon Counseling and Consultation, provides statewide forensic consultation, attachment assessments, and has more than 25 years’ experience counseling adoptive and foster parents and youth. She is a renowned and sought-after provider of training on trauma and attachment, throughout the United States and internationally.

Lucius Luther, MA in Human Development, Adoptive parent and NACAC Parent Support Specialist. He has extensive experience as a county social worker, guardian ad litem and community member. He provides training on foster care and adoption, provides peer support and has Permanency & Adoption Competency Certification through the University of Minnesota Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare.
