(June 2017) Children with early histories of abuse and neglect often end up not only struggling to connect with loved ones in their home, they also have to work much harder to learn in a mainstream school environment. Why is school so hard for children who have been mistreated? What is this link between how relational trauma impacts the brain and how that manifests in the classroom? What can be done about it?
In this webinar, Dr. Rennicke will take you through the fundamentals of relational neuroscience, how our brains get wired in our earliest relationships, and how abuse and neglect fundamentally alter almost every structure and function in maltreated children’s brains. The neuroscience will be presented in a relatable way so that you can begin to advocate for your child or client with their school counselors, case workers and teachers to get the educational services in their lives to start to really listen to these children’s unique needs.
Courtney Rennicke, PhD is a Columbia University trained Clinical Psychologist who runs a psychotherapy group practice, Rennicke & Associates, focusing on evidence-based and innovative psychotherapy for children and adults in New York City. Dr. Rennicke and her clinical staff specialize in providing attachment-focused family treatment to adoptive and foster care children and their families.
In addition to being certified as a Trainer, Consultant and Practitioner in Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP), Dr. Rennicke serves as the Board Member at Large for the United States and Treasurer for the Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy Institute. Dr. Rennicke is also the Co-Founder and President to the Adoption Foster Care therapist Network, a collective of mental health professionals specializing in attachment disorders in adoptive and foster care children and their families throughout New York State, New Jersey, and Connecticut.
