(February 27, 2018) Reframing Respite Care

Respite care is a benefit available to many adoptive and foster families. Yet in many cases respite care may not have been given the attention it needs or deserves. Too often families are not aware of, or misunderstand, the value of this opportunity for the parents and children to ‘chill out’ for a few hours or a weekend. In this webinar, we will discuss reasons why respite could literally save your family. We will discuss benefits and challenges of using respite regularly, sporadically or not at all. We will look at attachment and how respite can benefit everyone in the family while promoting healthy attachment. It is possible and necessary. We will also explore creative ways to attain respite as well as more traditional ways. Ways to determine how respite can benefit your family and your child will be discussed. You will leave with useful strategies to determine how much respite your family may need as well as how to make the arrangements.

Brenda Benning, MSW, LICSW received her Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of Minnesota and has trained with Heather Forbes, founder of the Beyond Consequences Inc., on multiple occasions. She is currently counseling families individually in home and in group settings. Her primary focus is adoptive families with children healing from trauma histories and attachment issues. Brenda and her husband are parenting ten children, nine through adoption; multiple with diagnosed trauma histories and attachment issues. By using techniques from both “Beyond Consequences” and her own book “Restoring the Hope, Empathy and Love in Adoptive Families”, she has been able to assist families and her own children in their healing journey.
Misty Coonce, MSW, LISW, is a Program Director at Ampersand Families. She has worked in the adoption field since 2009. She brings personal experience as an adoptee from the Minnesota foster care system. Misty earned her Master of Social Work degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2010, and is a Licensed Independent Social Worker in the state of Minnesota. She completed the rigorous Permanency and Adoption Competency Certificate Program through the University of Minnesota’s Center for Advanced Studies in Child Welfare in 2015.  The mission of Ampersand Families is to recruit and support permanent families for older youth, and to champion practices in adoption and permanency that restore belonging, dignity and hope. Misty helps provide numerous innovative supports to families to buoy them in their journeys, including our buddy family program, which aims to add to the circle of support for adoptive families.
